Leasing school property to another school
There are standard processes and agreements to use when you’re leasing school property to another school.
Leasing to another school
Your school can choose to lease space to another school to accommodate itinerant teachers who are attached to another school, like:
- Learning support coordinators
- Resource Teachers Learning and Behaviour (RTLB), or
- Resource Teachers Literacy (RTLit).
Changes are coming soon for RT Literacy roles. You’ll find information about the changes on the Ministry of Education website.
You can also lease to services like satellite units, sensory schools or health schools.
Your school will become the host/accommodating board for the arrangement. There are different types of agreements depending on the kind of school service you plan to accommodate – you’ll need to complete the Property Occupancy Document (POD) variation application form that applies.
- For RTLB and RTLit, use the RTLB form.
- For satellite units, sensory resource centres or health schools, use the satellites and sensory resource centres form.
- For learning support coordinators, download the standard POD variation and update it to include the name of the school and payment information. The employing school must sign the POD variation, and then you need to return it to us. The variation is not complete until the Secretary for Education consents the variation.
Sharing costs with other schools
The host school should pay for:
- capital upgrades or maintenance of the property
- buying or replacing furniture and equipment
- operational costs including heat, light and water
- external building cleaning
- internet access.
The tenant school should pay for:
- upgrading and maintaining furniture and equipment
- internal cleaning
- staff and office supplies.
Contact the property advisor at your regional office if you have any questions.
