Official Information Act (OIA) requests
You can ask to see information held by the New Zealand School Property Agency (NZSPA) under the Official Information Act 1982.
The Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) allows any eligible person to request information held by the government – this includes information held by government ministers, and central or local government departments and agencies.
You can make an OIA request to NZSPA if:
- you’re in New Zealand
- you’re a New Zealand citizen living overseas, or
- you represent a corporate body with a place of business in New Zealand.
Before you make an Official Information Act (OIA) request, it’s worth checking to see if the information you’re looking for is already publicly available. We publish our responses to OIA requests at the bottom of this page.
How to make an OIA request
To request official information from us, you can either:
- email us at info@schoolproperty.govt.nz with the subject link ‘OIA request’, or
- write to us at OIA requests, New Zealand School Property Agency (NZSPA), 25 The Terrace, Wellington 6011.
When you make a request, make sure you include:
- your name
- your preferred contact details, and
- full details of the information you would like to see.
We may contact you to ask for more details if we need them.
How we respond to OIA requests
By law, we're required to acknowledge your OIA request, and give you our decision on it, as soon as possible – and no later than 20 working days after we receive your request.
If we need more time to make a decision (for example, if you're requesting a large quantity of information) we'll let you know. We'll also:
- give you an idea of how long it will take to make our decision
- try to keep you updated on the progress of our response to your request.
Changing a request
If you decide to change or clarify your request, it will be considered a new request. The response time of 20 working days will start from the day after we receive the new request.
Making a complaint
If you feel we haven’t met our obligations to you under the Official Information Act, you can make a complaint. You can either:
- make a complaint to us directly at info@schoolproperty.govt.nz, or
- submit your complaint to the Office of the Ombudsman.
Official Information Act responses
If you're looking for OIA responses older than 1 October 2026 when the New Zealand School Property Agency (NZSPA) was established, you'll find them on the Ministry of Education website.
