Maintaining a Teen Parent Unit
If your school hosts a Teen Parent Unit (TPU), you need to know what it’s responsible for with regards to maintenance and building upgrades.
What a Teen Parent Unit is
TPUs are for students who are pregnant or have a child. They have early learning services attached.
Students have to enrol at the host school to attend the TPU. They have their classes at the TPU and can also attend some classes with their peers at the host school.
Maintenance and funding for TPUs in Crown-owned buildings
If you have a TPU located in a Crown-owned building at your school, you're responsible for maintaining and modernising the building like any other building at your school.
You'll receive property maintenance grant funding to maintain the building and 5 Year Agreement (5YA) funding for its capital improvements. Funding is based on the floor size (in square metres) of the TPU.
You’ll get TPU property funding with your regular school funding. As the host school is funded for property works you’ll need to:
- include the TPU in your 10 Year Property Plan (10YPP)
- budget for any maintenance and capital improvements it may need.
Maintaining a privately-owned TPU building
If you have a TPU located in a privately owned building, the building will be leased by us. We’ll manage the lease, including the rent payments.
The school board is responsible for ensuring the building is compliant – that it has a current building warrant of fitness (BWOF). You’ll need to notify us if this has lapsed.
The school board will also need to manage and pay for:
- furniture and equipment
- tenant damage
- internal decoration, and
- cleaning.
