Weathertightness design standards for school buildings
Contractors and suppliers must meet our weathertightness standards for new school buildings. The standards also apply to extensions, additions, and alterations to the exterior of existing buildings.
About the standards
All contractors and suppliers must meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code, as well as our school-specific durability requirements for weathertightness. This includes:
- increased roof pitch (slope)
- additional drained and ventilated wall cavity requirements
- specific spouting requirements, and
- increased cladding durability.
When the standards apply
The weathertightness design standards apply to all new state school buildings, including:
- building replacements
- extensions and additions to an existing building, and
- alterations to the outside of an existing building, like a roof or wall cladding.
