Rebuilding Christchurch schools

The Government is investing over $1.6 billion in the Christchurch Schools Rebuild (CSR) programme, to rebuild and repair 115 schools in greater Christchurch following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.

Launched in 2013, the CSR programme has so far refurbished, rebuilt, or built 103 schools, benefiting approximately 52,000 students. The remaining schools are expected to be completed by 2027.

Progress to date

114 schools were in the programme (115 including Ko Taku Reo) with the programme currently approaching a close out phase.

Building back better

Once completed, greater Christchurch will have an enhanced schooling network – designed to meet the changing needs of teaching and learning well into the future. As part of this work, the rebuild standards align with NZSPA design standards which exceed the New Zealand Building Code in key areas such as building envelope (weathertightness) as well as structural requirements. We’re also using cost-effective, repeatable designs that meet strict structural and geotechnical requirements.

Use of former sites

Some school sites have become vacant during the course of the CSR programme. These sites will either be retained for future educational use or sold (put into disposal). All properties in disposal will go through a series of steps under the Public Works Act 1981.

Aranui School

Kendal School

Linwood College Lower Fields

  • Current site use: part of the site has been sold to Christchurch City Council as it required for public works.

Linwood Intermediate

Phillipstown School

Redcliffs School
